I found my first bad review. It wasn't posted to amazon.com or Goodreads, but on a blog. I found it only because a friend of mine happened across it and sent me the link.
First of all, I do need to apologize to the reviewer (whom I will not name). This person did indeed download a bad copy of my book - the formatting for Kindle was terrible and I had no idea until someone contacted me and told me. Feeling rather embarrassed that I was such a noob, I will concede that the thousands of free books I gave away were in horrid formatting. However, that has since been fixed and the next thousand were all in good format.
But on to the review. I had to read it twice because at first I wasn't sure if the blogger was even talking about Forbidden. The blog itself was more into arts and crafts rather than books, but the blogger fancied themselves a writer as well. So naturally I followed the link to their books. However, they do not offer a sample - one must simply buy the book.
The reviewer mentioned that Forbidden moved too quick, and actually referred to it as a cross between Twilight and Star Trek. Forbidden is not science fiction, nor were there any vampires in it. It wasn't YA romance, either. The reviewer also mentioned that it was full of cliches.
Really? Well, it is a romance, so there is a happily ever after. That, I suppose, is cliche. But the romantic hero was not a super rich man (he is, in fact, an Elvin Warrior). The leading lady was not super beautiful. The Rival Man was actually a decent, honest man. I don't see a lot of that in romance books, but maybe the thousands that I've read were just the wrong ones.
Ah well - truth is, not everybody is going to love my book, and that's OK. At least the reviewer spelled my name right, and that's all that matters in the end, right?
